Towns in Cameron Highlands

Within Cameron Highlands, there are a few major towns which are commonly frequented by visitors while there are several other smaller ones as well. As one of the most popular hill resorts in Malaysia, Cameron Highlands is known to have a very strong English village character to it despite the rapid development in recent years.

The 3 major towns here are Ringlet, Tanah Rata and Brinchang, all of which have their own respective amenities and facilities. Besides that, there are smaller towns here like Tringkap and Kampung Raja, among others.

Ringlet Town

Ringlet is the first town that you will reach if you are coming to Cameron Highlands through the Tapah road. This is a welcoming sight especially for those who have travelled through the long and winding road for over an hour coming up from the foot of the highlands. Among the few major towns, Ringlet is known to be the quietest. It is the main agricultural hub where the Bertam Valley is located not far from here as well.

Tanah Rata Town

After Ringlet, you will get to Tanah Rata which is the main administrative centre of Cameron Highlands. Tanah Rata is the local phrase for ‘flat land’ which is used to illustrate its natural flat environment here which is why it is such a popular place among visitors. Tanah Rata is where the main transportation hub is in which the bus and taxi terminal is located. Besides that, there are several hotels, resorts, apartments and budget accommodation options here for visitors and tourists to choose from.

Tanah Rata has a very balanced and complete eco-system where there are schools and police station, clinics and a hospital within its vicinity. The shops here offer all types of food while services like money changers, banks and travel agents are available as well. For those who like to venture into the forest can do so through the jungle trails here.

Brinchang

While Tanah Rata is known for its services, Brinchang is a great place for food and entertainment. This is the busiest place in Cameron Highlands and is within minutes from Tanah Rata. Brinchang is the second largest town here where it is home to the very popular Night Market. Besides that, there are hotels and all types of food choices here. Brinchang is the gateway that leads to many of the attractions in Cameron Highlands like the vegetable farms, tea plantations, strawberry farms and others.

Sungai Palas, Kea Farm, Tringkap, Kampung Raja

Apart from the 3 major towns of Cameron Highlands, there are several other smaller towns like Sungai Palas, Kea Farm, Trinkap and Kampung Raja.

Sungai Palas is located not far from Brinchang town and is quite near to Kea Farm. This tea plantation area is actually owned and operated by Boh Plantations, the largest tea producer here. Meanwhile, Kea Farm is located around the northern region of Brinchang and is the town you will arrive to before reaching Tringkap. There is a very popular vegetable market here which sells fresh produce and other items while the Ee Feng Gu and Butterfly Garden are located here as well.

Tringkap is known for its farming community where travelling across the town will bring you to the stalls along the roads that sell the local products. Located about 5 minutes away from Brinchang, it is known for its quieter environment as Tringkap is still not as developed as other major towns like Brinchang and Tanah Rata. Meanwhile, Kampung Raja is located towards the tail end of Cameron Highlands. If you are travelling here from the north, this is the first town you will arrive at and the last stop if you are heading out to Ipoh and other towns in that direction.

Tea Plantations

The cool and pristine weather in Cameron Highlands makes this place an ideal location for many types of natural produce like vegetables and tea. There are several tea plantations here which make Cameron Highlands such a distinctive tourist destination. As such, anyone visiting this highland must make a trip into one of the plantations to learn about the tea growing and making process while enjoying a sip of premium tea amidst the highlands.

Boh Tea Plantation

Boh is perhaps the most popular local brands when it comes to tea. Operated by BOH plantations, it is the leading company in Malaysia with 3 large plantations in Cameron Highlands itself and another in Selangor. In Cameron, Boh is produced through Boh Plantations, one in Sungai Palas and another around Fairlie Garden. The Sungai Palas Tea Estate is located further north from Brinchang town that includes the Sungai Palas Visitor Centre and a Tea Center that offers a wide range of products and services related to tea plantation here.

Fairlie Garden Plantation

Meanwhile, the Fairlie Garden plantation is located in Habu in Ringlet town not far from Brinchang. BOH has been around since the early nineties when it was established by an English businessman, JA Russell. He saw the potential of growing tea here due to its climate and mineral-rich soil that inspired him to make use of this environment. The Habu land here was then purchased and planting of the tea started and grew by leaps and bounds ever since.

Bharat Tea Plantation

The second largest tea producer in Cameron Highlands is operated by the Bharat Tea Plantation, otherwise known as the Cameron Valley Tea Plantation. This setup was started back in 1933 and remains one of the most popular tea brands known as ‘Cameron Valley’ loved by Malaysians across the country. Located along the main road in Tanah Rata, this plantation remains the most visited by tourists.

Schools in Cameron

There are several public schools located around Cameron Highlands which are attended by the children of the local families here. The schools offer classes in the primary and secondary levels as required by the Malaysian government.

Public schools in Cameron Highlands are divided into 2 major types which are the Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan which are more language based and the Sekolah Kebangsaan which adhere fully to the language and curriculum of the Malaysian government. In terms of Chinese schools, there are a few here like the SJK (C) Tringkap, Kuala Terla, Bertam Valley, Tanah Rata and Kea Farm while the one in Brinchang is among the most prominent.

Brinchang Chinese School

Located along Jalan Besar in Brinchang, the Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan (C) Brinchang is one of the most easily located schools here which has about 150 pupils at any time.

There are the Tamil-based schools like SJK (T) Kuala Terla, Ladang Boh 1 and 2, Ladang SYL, Ringlet and a few others. Meanwhile, in terms of Sekolah Kebangsaan, there are several schools here like the SK Brinchang, Lemoi, Telanok and Terisu, among others.

Convent School Tanah Rata

In Tanah Rata is the Sekolah Kebangsaan Convent which is known as a SBT or Sekolah Berprestasi Tinggi. Often referred to as SK Convent, it has one of the oldest architectures here where the school was once used as a British military hospital. In fact, the building in SK Convent has often been said to be very elegant.

Another public school here is called the Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Sultan Ahmad Shah which is located in Tanah Rata. Its location is at the Persiaran Dayang Endah which is where the Tanah Rata hospital is located where this school is one of the larger ones in Cameron Highlands. There are about 80 teachers in this school which is known in short as SMK Sultan Ahmad Shah while it accommodates to about 1,000 pupils at any one time.

Strawberry Farms

No other place in Malaysia has the perfect climate and environment to grow strawberries like Cameron Highlands. As such, strawberry farms remain as one of the major attractions here.

Kok Lim Strawberry Farm

The Kok Lim Strawberry Farm is located in Brinchang. It is a very popular tourist destination here which is one of the largest farms in Cameron. Located not far from the main road outside Brinchang town, it houses a lot of strawberries as well as many other facilities. This includes a shopping gallery, a vintage café and a vegetable market where there are fresh produce on sale each day. Meanwhile, the Time Tunnel museum is located here as well.

S’Corner Central Market

The S’Corner Central Market is located in Kea Farm. It is a strawberry farm which grows mushrooms as well. Here is where there is a vegetable market and several souvenir shops while visitors can enjoy the local and traditional style of enjoying coffee or tea or the local delicacies served in the shops here.

Big Red Strawberry Farm

Located on a steep hill slope that overlooks Brinchang, the Big Red Strawberry Farm is a farm known for this fruit as well as for organic vegetables. Known as Taman Agro Tourism, it houses a products shop, a café and strawberry picking activities.

Raaju’s Hill Strawberry Farm

Not far from Brinchang town is Raaju’s Hill which is located on a ridge-top at Kea Farm. Visitors can pick strawberries by weight while there are fresh produce on sale each day. Besides that, there is a café here that serves snacks, a wide selection of pastries and the local tea.

Blueberry Earthouse

Located in Brinchang, the Blueberry Earthouse is one of the main strawberry farms in Cameron Highlands. Located not far from Kea Farm, Bluberry Earthouse does grow some vegetables as well while as the name implies grow blueberries too. Visitors are able to enjoy the strawberries here while picking the ripe ones as well.

Robinson Falls/Parit Falls

The rich vegetation and rainforests around Cameron Highlands are among the locations that one must visit when coming to this highland town. This is where you can enjoy the relaxing sounds of the water gushing down the rocks while trekking into the deep forests here. There are 2 main waterfalls here which are The Robinson Falls and the Parit Falls.

Robinson Falls

The Robinson Falls is located within the Tanah Rata enclave. You can get here from the jungle trail coming in from the bus terminal of the town centre which is located along the main road. From there, you need to go past Century Pines Resort which will bring you towards a small bridge. That will then take you to the falls where you will then need to trek for about 10 minutes. Then, you will be approaching Robinson Falls as you will start hearing the first sounds of gushing water hitting the large rocks along the way. Robinson Falls is a great place to unwind but if you are in for the adventure because you can hang out for a while or alternatively, you can continue on to try and reach Gunung Beremban through the jungle trail that goes from here.

Parit Falls

The Parit Falls meanwhile is located not far from here. It is smaller as compared to Robinsons Fall. It is located in Tanah Rata as well where you can start from the Century Pines Resort towards the Old Smokehouse. From there, you will have to trek uphill where you will reach a tower which gives you a great view of the surroundings. Nestled within Kampung Taman Sedia, getting to Parit falls can be quite interesting as you would be seeing a lot of different flora and fauna along the way while enjoying the cool weather before reaching this relaxation haven.

Religious Places in Cameron Highlands

There are no shortages of religious places in Cameron Highlands where there are a few major places of worship for the people here. This is because like any other towns in Malaysia, Cameron Highlands has a healthy mixture of people from all backgrounds and religions. Besides offering the places for devotees to carry out their duties, there are 2 very prominent places which welcome visitors and tourists on most days.

The Gurudwara Sahib Brinchang is one such place. Located in the town of Brinchang, this temple was built for the Sikhs here when there were about 500 of them during the 1930s. Most of them were employed by the contractors here that time to build roads and the infrastructure around the highlands where they went on to settle in as well.

Indian Temple in Cameron Highlands

Built on a 38,000 square feet land, it once had a store house before the Gurdwara Sahib was built. Today there are over 20 Sikh families around Brinchang and Tanah Rata where there are weekly services held here on Sundays.

Another prominent place of worship here is the Sam Poh Buddhist Temple. Located in Brinchang as well, the temple is enacted on top of a hill that overlooks the town. This temple is the 4th largest Buddhist temple in Malaysia which was built in 1972 which houses a large statue of Buddha and some very remarkable architecture designs which has withstood the test of time over the past few decades.

Besides that, there are many other statues here where devotees come to pay their respects during festivals and important dates of the Chinese calendar. During important dates, the food court is opened to public where the temple serves free vegetarian food while there is a Buddhist library here that provides all types of reading material and literature pertaining to this faith and other related resources.

Pasar malam in Cameron Highlands

The Pasar Malam or Night Market is perhaps one of the most iconic attractions in Cameron Highlands. After all, a visit to this highland town will not be complete without trying all the local delicacies and experiencing the fresh produce of this place and the night market would be the perfect place to go especially if you want to find the best of everything in one location.

Known to some as the Brinchang Night Market, it is where the night comes alive here which is a common place to go by the locals, visitors and foreigners. The Cameron Night Market is located along the main road of Brinchang town where the stalls here have already grown in size and population since it started. As such, the market usually causes a massive traffic jam especially when the sun starts to set around the town.

Finding a parking space might be a challenge but once you found a space, the walk can be very refreshing. At the Cameron Pasar Malam, you can find all types of vegetables and fruits which are fresh from the farms while those who come here for the souvenirs and other items can find them at a bargain here.

One should try the Apam Balik here which is one of the most popular local snacks and eat as you walk along. Besides that, there are the strawberries which are fresh and nicely packed in transparent boxes. If you like to bring some home, you can buy the strawberry jam or snacks while the honey produce are quite popular here as well.

For the lovebirds, nothing beats buying a bouquet of fresh flowers for your loved ones which are freshly plucked from the plantations and farms around here which are a lot cheaper and fresher than any other places around the country.

Gunung Brinchang

The peak of Gunung Brinchang can be reached through a tarmac road although it takes some driving skills to do so. It is the second highest mountain in Cameron Highlands and is a great place to visit which offers one of the most amazing views of the surroundings here. Gunung Brinchang has a watchtower at the top where it is one of the most popular places visited by people to see the landscapes and sceneries here. Not far from here is the very popular Mossy Forest where you can drive here or hike up through a jungle trail that comes in from Brinchang.

Mossy Forest

Located not far from Gunung Brinchang is Mossy Forest. It is a forest area where trees at high elevation grows and exist within a unique eco-system. There are low-level clouds here where as the name implies, create a mossy and fluffy surroundings. There is a boardwalk here that gives visitors a unique experience and view of the forest. One might be able to spot many types of insects, frogs, small animals and plants here. Mossy Forest is connected to Mount Brinchang while towards the end of the boardwalk is where one could head towards the highest peak in Cameron Highlands, Gunung Irau.

Mount Brinchang Lockout Tower

The Mount Brinchang Lookout Tower is located in Gunung Brinchang where it offers a great place to see the surroundings. Getting to the tower can be quite fun as you will need to hike up the trail where you can see all types of beautiful flora and fauna. Once you reach the tower, you can walk up the structure and enjoy a bird’s-eye-view of some of the most breathtaking sceneries of Cameron Highlands.

Galleria Time Tunnel

The Galleria Time Tunnel is perhaps one of the most unique attractions in the country. The local museum here is located in Brinchang where it is housed within the Kok Lim Strawberry Farm. There are more than 1,000 exhibits on show here which feature the historical images and cultural heritage of this unique highland town. There are some rustic images of times during the colonial era and how things were practiced in Cameron Highlands before rapid development came along. Entry into the museum is RM3 for children and RM5 for adults.

Orang Asli Settlements

There are various settlements and villages of the Orang Asli that stretch along the foot of the mountain all the way around Cameron Highlands. Some of these settlements are more advanced than others where the Orang Asli Village is a more modern community located around the Tapah Road in Tanah Rata. Most of the Orang Asli or Aborigines here are of the Temiah tribe where they are a community of people who still enjoy the produce of nature without the intervention of modern development.

Besides the fresh vegetation of flowers, vegetables and other local produce in Cameron Highlands, there are several monuments and landmarks which make this highland resort such a top travel destination in Malaysia. In fact, these structures and landmarks very much give Cameron Highlands its identity and character in their own ways.

KFC and Marrybrown

There will never be short of choices and varieties of food when it comes to Cameron Highlands. This is because you can find all types of local delicacies and dishes around here. It would be best to take some time in enjoying the sights and sounds of Cameron Highlands and enjoy all the different types of food here.

However, for those who prefer to pack and go or go for something more familiar, there are fast food restaurants here as well. Located in the heart of Brinchang town is a KFC branch which can be easily spotted through its standard red and white signage. Colonel Sanders’ will welcome the fried chicken lover where you can see this chain as you are approaching the town centre.

Meanwhile, if you prefer a fast food menu closer to the local taste, you can go towards Tanah Rata where there is a Marrybrown there. This outlet is located around the main road of Tanah Rata in Jalan Besar where you can enjoy a wide variety of fried chicken and other western dishes. Besides that, Marrybrown has chicken and fish burgers, the children’s favourite French fries, meals for kids, desserts and ice-cream and their very own nasi ayam MB and other rice servings.

Hospital Tanah rata and Police stations

In Cameron Highlands, the public services are easily and readily available at all times. For minor illness like cough and fever, there are several clinics available around the major town areas but for more serious medical treatment and reporting, there is the Hospital Sultanah Hajjah Kalsom which is located in Tanah Rata.

This is where one can find a broad range of medical services for all types of illness and needs. This hospital was officiated by the Sultan of Pahang, Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah in 2008 and has been offering medical services for the locals and those who visit Cameron Highlands ever since. Located along Persiaran Dayang Endah, this hospital is equipped with some of the most modern and state-of-the-art facilities here for the best services required.

As Cameron Highlands is constantly visited by tourists and people each day, safety remains as one of the priorities. As such, it is very common to see patrol cars wandering around the respective towns and major areas of Cameron Highlands. There are police stations that provide all types of services required by the people while the Pondok Polis is a smaller version of a police presence where they are mostly used as a touch-base station.

There are several police stations located in all the major towns in Cameron Highlands. One is in Kampung Raja where there is a Pondok Polis Tringkap located around the vicinity as well.

The Balai Polis Ringlet oversees the area surrounding Ringlet town and the nearby villages. Besides that, there is a Pondok Polis Lembah Bertam located within the boundaries of this town as well. Meanwhile, there is a Balai Polis in Tanah Rata while the one in Brinchang is perhaps the most easily identifiable as it is located along the main road and where the very popular Pasar Malam is held.

Water Crest Valley – This is perhaps one of the most unique nurseries in Cameron where it has a water-crest farm. Within the nursery is the Chiew Garden Café that serves a broad range of local dishes.

Rose Farms & Gardens in Cameron Highlands

Rose Valley – As the name suggests, this is a great place to go if you like roses. There are many types of roses here which come in many colors where you can enjoy the sights of the plants welcoming you along the aisles.

Rose Center – Located in Kea Farm, this flower garden is open to public at RM5 for adults and RM2 for children. There are all types of flowers here while you can buy baby plants and planting materials as well.

Agro Technology Park in MARDI

Located in Tanah Rata in Cameron Highlands is the very unique Agro Technology Park. This is where you can see some of the most interesting and exciting vegetation which are grown here. The Agro Technology Park is operated by MARDI or Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute by the Malaysian government.

There are 6 main areas here at the park. This includes the Research Centre where most of the studies are carried out. The Information Centre is where visitors can buy souvenirs and learn more about the efforts involved at the park.

More than 40 types of Roses and Strawberries

For those who like to see what really happens here can visit the various gardens which are divided into English, Herbs, Orchids and Rose. This is where you can see the 40 different types of roses, 10 types of strawberries and hundreds of citrus fruits.

As it is one of the major projects undertaken by MARDI, it welcomes more than 100,000 visitors each year. The park was originally opened by the British in 1926 which makes it the oldest research station in Malaysia. Entry to the park is RM5 for adults and RM3 for children where it is opened daily except for public holidays. Visitors can find all types of items here including exhibitions and latest technologies involved in the agriculture industry of Malaysia. Besides that, there is a cafeteria here while those who are adventurous can try out the jungle trails here which comes in from Tanah Rata and heads towards the foot of Gunung Beremban not far away.
